Practice: what your phone actually says
What you will be able to do
Read a LINE thread the way it lands on your phone: hear the dictionary word inside a chat spelling, recognise the furniture (the repeat mark, the row of fives, the warm particle), and pull the time and the deleted pronouns out of lines that state neither.
Chat Thai is spelled by ear. When a short word is in no dictionary, say it aloud with your tone rules and the sound hands you the real word: มั้ย is ไหม, ดิ is สิ, นึง is หนึ่ง, คับ is ครับ. Around those spellings sits a small set of furniture that never changes — 555 is laughter, ๆ repeats the word in front of it, piled-up final letters are emphasis, จ้า is warmth, and there are no question marks because the question word already does that job.
What is this bubble doing?
เย็นนี้กินข้าวกันมั้ย
มั้ย is the chat spelling of ไหม, the question particle, so the line is a question even though nothing on it looks like a question mark; เย็นนี้ is this evening and กินข้าวกัน is eat together. It cannot be about last night, because เย็นนี้ points forward. And nothing here reports a finished or cancelled plan: แล้ว, the word that marks something already done, is not in the line at all, so neither the already-eaten reading nor the dinner-is-off reading has anything to stand on.
Which dictionary word is hiding behind this chat spelling?
มั้ย
มั้ย spells ไหม the way people actually say it, with a high tone, so the question particle is the word underneath. ไหน is 'where' — a different vowel and a different job, and it is the word in อยู่ไหน. สิ is the nudge particle, and chat writes that one ดิ, not มั้ย. หนึ่ง is 'one', and its chat form is นึง. Sound the syllable out with your tone rules and only one of the four comes back.
What time does this bubble give?
น่าจะทุ่มนึง รถติดมากกก
ทุ่ม counts the hours after dark, and นึง is chat for หนึ่ง, so ทุ่มนึง is the first hour after six, 7 pm. The ladder runs หกโมงเย็น 6 pm, ทุ่มนึง 7 pm, สองทุ่ม 8 pm, up to ห้าทุ่ม at 11 pm, so 6 in the evening would need หกโมงเย็น, not ทุ่ม. And neither 1 am nor 1 pm is reachable from ทุ่ม at all: the word only exists after dark, which is exactly why treating the 'one' in it as one o'clock puts you six hours out.
What is it?
A friend's message ends with a run of the digit 5, attached to nothing you could count.
5 is ห้า, so a row of fives reads hâa hâa hâa, which is why Thai writes laughter with digits. The give-away is in the situation itself: it is attached to nothing countable and sits at the end of a joke. Chat does use plain digits for real quantities — a number of baht, a number of seats — so the digits alone never tell you which is which, but a quantity always has a classifier or a unit word beside it and this has none. And clock times in chat come as words after ทุ่ม or โมง, or in the small grey figures LINE prints beside every bubble, never as one digit repeated.
Which particle does she attach?
In the thread, Nok answers 'no problem, no rush' and attaches the particle that tells you these two are close.
The line is ได้จ้า ไม่รีบ. จ้า is the warm particle that stands in for ครับ and ค่ะ between people who are close, and men and women both use it; its questioning twin is จ๊ะ. ครับ and ค่ะ are the polite pair, and this thread drops them deliberately — keeping them with a friend would sound stiff, almost sarcastic, which is the opposite of what this bubble is doing. นะ is a softener that leans on a request or a statement, as in อย่าหลงนะ; it tells you about the tone of one sentence, not about the relationship.
What has just happened?
รอแป๊บ เพิ่งลงแท็กซี่
ลง is going down or out, and เพิ่ง marks something that happened a moment ago, so เพิ่งลงแท็กซี่ is 'just got out of the taxi'. Getting in is the opposite direction and nothing in the line says it. รอแป๊บ is 'hang on a sec', clipped from แป๊บเดียว, with the ๊ on mid-class ป writing the high tone people actually say — so he is asking the other person to wait, not waiting for a taxi himself and not asking anyone to book him one. แท็กซี่ is simply 'taxi' respelled in Thai, the ็ shortening the vowel.
How is this read aloud?
โอเคๆ
ๆ is mái yá-mók, the repeat mark, and it doubles the whole word in front of it, so this is oo-khee oo-khee. It does not repeat only the final syllable, and it is not punctuation: it never marks a pause and it never touches tone, which is fixed by the spelling of the word itself. Do not confuse it with the other doubling device in this register, the piled-up final letters of มากกก, which stretch a word for emphasis like English 'sooo' while you still say มาก once.
Who has arrived, and who is being asked about?
ถึงแล้ว อยู่ไหน
There is not one pronoun in the line. ถึงแล้ว is 'arrived', with แล้ว marking it done, and the only person it can belong to is the sender, because the second clause then turns outward and asks อยู่ไหน, 'where are you'. Chat deletes anything context can give back, so the subjects come from the position of the two clauses, not from words. It is not a question about your arrival: there is no question particle on ถึงแล้ว, and the question word ไหน sits in the other clause. Nothing in either clause is plural.
Which word is it?
Beside your own message bubble, LINE prints a small grey word next to the time. It is telling you the other person has seen the message.
อ่านแล้ว is 'read': อ่าน is to read and แล้ว marks it done. It is the app's own label, not something either person typed. ถึงแล้ว is the near neighbour that catches people, because it carries the same แล้ว, but its verb is ถึง, to arrive, so it is a message meaning 'I'm here'. รอแป๊บ ('hang on a sec') and เพิ่งลงแท็กซี่ ('just got out of the taxi') are both bubbles in the thread too. Reading the interface is part of reading the thread, and the verb is what separates them.
What is being agreed to?
เอาดิ ร้านส้มตำเจ้าเดิมนะ
เจ้าเดิม carries the whole answer: เดิม means the same as before, and เจ้า is the classifier for a food seller, so it is the usual vendor, not a new one. เอาดิ is 'yeah, let's' — ดิ is chat for the nudge particle สิ. ร้าน is a shop, so they are going to it: nothing in the line puts anyone in a kitchen, and nothing orders anything to be brought. Notice too that the whole restaurant phrase runs together with a single space in the message, because Thai spaces between phrases and never inside them.
What does this bubble say will happen, and what does it ask of the person reading it?
เดี๋ยวไปรับที่ปากซอย อย่าหลงนะ
เดี๋ยว plus a verb is the instant future, so เดี๋ยวไปรับ is 'I'll come and get you in a sec' — the sender is doing the collecting, and ปากซอย, the mouth of the soi, is where. Then อย่า plus a verb is a bare negative command, so อย่าหลงนะ tells him not to get lost, softened only by นะ, which between friends is plenty. The direction is fixed by who is doing ไปรับ, so the reading that has him collecting her reverses it. Nothing sends him walking anywhere alone, and หลง has not happened yet: อย่า makes it a warning, not a report.
Which spelling did they type?
A friend types a short word you cannot find in any dictionary. You say it out loud with your tone rules and hear neung — 'one', the way it comes out at speed.
นึง is the chat spelling of หนึ่ง: the ห and the tone mark drop out because that is how the word comes out at speed — low-tone nèung flattens to mid-tone neung, which is exactly what น plus a short vowel and a live final ง spells with no mark, and exactly why นึง is in no dictionary. หนึ่ง itself is the dictionary form, so it would never have sent you hunting in the first place. ทุ่ม is the after-dark hour word — a different word with a different sound, and the one นึง usually sits next to in ทุ่มนึง. ดิ is chat for สิ, the nudge particle, and sounds nothing like neung.
There is no question mark. What makes this line a question?
จะถึงกี่โมง
กี่โมง is 'what time', and a question word carries the question on its own, which is why Thai so rarely bothers with a ?. There is no particle at the end of this line at all: มั้ย, the one that would do that job, is in a different bubble. จะ is the future marker, so it tells you the arriving has not happened yet and nothing more; a statement with จะ in it stays a statement. And the question is not left to the situation here, because the word doing the asking is printed in the line.
What is this?
คับ
คับ is ครับ spelled by ear, with the ร of the cluster gone because it is not said at speed — the same logic that turns ไหม into มั้ย, สิ into ดิ and หนึ่ง into นึง. It is a register, not a slip, so nobody reads it as an error to be corrected. ค่ะ is a separate word, the women's particle, and it is not what คับ is aimed at. And หรือเปล่า does shrink in chat, but to ป่ะ, not to this; when an unfamiliar short word turns up, assume ear-spelling first and the dictionary second.
Common mistake
ทุ่มนึง is 7 in the evening, not one o'clock: after dark Thai restarts the clock, so หกโมงเย็น is 6 pm, ทุ่มนึง 7 pm, สองทุ่ม 8 pm. And chat deletes every pronoun context can hand back, so a line like ถึงแล้ว อยู่ไหน has to be read for who arrived and who is being asked, from the position of the two clauses alone.
