Practice: four verbs that stretch
What you will be able to do
Take medicine, excuse a late arrival, report a fine and name an addiction using กิน, เล่น, โดน and ติด.
Four verbs stretch far: กิน eats, drinks and uses fuel/time; เล่น plays and, after a verb, means not seriously; โดน is the adversative passive (unwanted only, spoken); ติด is stuck and addicted.
กินยา (take medicine) — why กิน?
กิน (gin) covers swallowing pills; there is no separate verb for taking medicine. กินยาหลังอาหาร — take the medicine after meals.
แอร์เครื่องนี้กินไฟมาก — กินไฟ means…
Machines eat fuel: กินไฟ (gin fai) for electricity, กินน้ำมัน (gin nám-man) for a car that drinks petrol.
เล่น after a verb (พูดเล่น) means…
เล่น after a verb means not seriously: ผมพูดเล่น — I'm joking. The standard repair line when a joke lands wrong.
โดนฝน means…
โดน + noun means unwelcome contact: โดนฝน — got rained on. The rain acted on you; you did not act at all.
โดน only fits…
โดน (doon) only fits what you did not want: โดนด่า, โดนปรับ, โดนฝน. If something good happened, don't reach for it — speech marks nothing (เขาชวน) and writing uses ได้รับ.
โดนยุงกัด — the agent (ยุง) sits…
โดน + doer + verb: โดนยุงกัด — mosquito-bitten. The mosquito sits between โดน and the biting, exactly where an agent goes. No word for “by” is needed.
โดนปรับ means…
โดนปรับ (doon bpràp) — get fined. One of the โดน compounds you'll hear soonest, along with โดนโกง (get cheated) and โดนหลอก (get tricked).
ถูก (thùuk) as the passive is…
ถูก is not wrong, it is a news bulletin. Speak โดน, read ถูก. Saying ถูกปรับ out loud sounds like a headline; โดนปรับ is what you actually say.
รถติด means…
รถติด (rót dtìt) — cars stuck — is the everyday word for a traffic jam. ขอโทษที่มาช้า รถติดมาก — sorry I'm late, the traffic was terrible.
ติดธุระ is used to…
ติดธุระ (dtìt thú-rá) — I have something on. The all-purpose polite refusal; the errand does the refusing, not you.
ติดเกม means…
ติด + the thing = addicted to it: ติดเกม (gaming), ติดกาแฟ (coffee), ติดบุหรี่ (cigarettes), ติดหวาน (a sweet tooth).
แผลโดนน้ำ แล้วติดเชื้อ means…
Two stretch verbs in one clinic sentence: โดนน้ำ — contacted by water — and ติดเชื้อ — the infection stuck.
รถสตาร์ทไม่ติด — ไม่ติด here means…
ไม่ติด is the failure-to-catch sense: รถสตาร์ทไม่ติด — the bike won't start; ไฟไม่ติด — the light won't come on.
เขาชวนไปงานแต่ง (good news) — why no โดน?
โดน only fits what you did not want. Something good (they asked me to the wedding) takes no marker in speech; writing uses ได้รับ. โดนเชิญ would make the invitation sound like a summons.
Common mistake
Two halves of one mistake. โดน only fits what you did not want — for good news use no marker or ได้รับ. And ถูก (thùuk) is the written passive: speak โดน, read ถูก. Saying ถูกปรับ out loud sounds like a news bulletin.
