Practice: saying where things are
What you will be able to do
Ask where something is and understand the answer, using อยู่ with the full set of position words, without confusing near and far.
อยู่ (yùu) asks where a known thing is; มี (mii) asks whether it exists. Position words hang off it — ใน in, บน on, ใต้ under, ข้างๆ next to, ตรงข้าม opposite, ระหว่าง between — and near/far must never be said bare.
ใกล้ vs ไกล — the danger is…
ใกล้ (glâi, near) vs ไกล (glai, far) differ only in tone, and a driver who mishears you will not ask, he will simply drive. Never use either bare.
The safe way to say “close by” is…
Say ใกล้ๆ (glâi-glâi) for close by, or ไม่ไกล (mâi glai) / ไกลไหม (glai mǎi) when far is involved, and confirm with a number. A doubled word and a number survive a bad tone.
อยู่ vs มี — to ask if a pharmacy exists here, you say…
อยู่ asks where a KNOWN thing is. มี asks whether the thing is there at all: มีร้านขายยาแถวนี้ไหม — is there a pharmacy around here.
ห้องน้ำอยู่ไหน — what people actually say is…
อยู่ไหน (yùu nǎi) is what people actually say; อยู่ที่ไหน is the fuller form and equally correct.
อยู่ตรงไหน is used when…
อยู่ตรงไหน (yùu dtrong-nǎi) — whereabouts exactly? Use it when อยู่ไหน got you an answer that was too vague.
ใน (nai) means in: กุญแจอยู่ในกระเป๋า — the keys are in the bag.
บน (bon) means on: โทรศัพท์อยู่บนโต๊ะ — the phone is on the table.
อยู่ after นอน marks the action as ongoing — the sleeping. The position comes from ใต้เตียง (under the bed).
ข้างๆ (khâang-khâang) — right next to: the pharmacy is right next to the bank.
ตรงข้าม (dtrong-khâam) — opposite: the bank is opposite the hotel. กับ is optional.
ข้างใน (khâang-nai) stands alone — he's inside. เขาอยู่ใน is not possible, since ใน needs a noun after it.
ธนาคารอยู่ทางขวามือ — this is the form…
ทางขวามือ (thaang-khwǎa-meu), right-hand side, is the form drivers use. ข้างขวา works too.
ร้านอยู่เลยธนาคารไปนิดหนึ่ง — the shop is…
ไป (loei…bpai) — past: the shop is a little past the bank. The opposite is ก่อนถึง — before you reach.
ระหว่าง (rá-wàang) — between: the hospital is between the market and the school.
Common mistake
The mistake that costs real time is ใกล้ (near) against ไกล (far), because a driver who mishears will not ask, he will simply drive. Never use either bare: say ใกล้ๆ for close by, ไม่ไกล or ไกลไหม when far is involved, and confirm with a number.
